Working across multiple disciplines—including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology—medical technologists test and analyze blood, tissue samples and more. After testing, they interpret results and suggest follow-up tests or procedures.
These skills make medical technologists—also known as medical laboratory scientists (MLS)—a key part of our health care team. Their work in our laboratories provides Veterans with accurate and efficient test results, and their investigations deliver vital information to clinicians.
It is a such an important role, VA has developed a program that helps aspiring medical technologists with their training, helps pay for their education, and even offers a path to employment after graduation.
VA’s Student Trainee Experience Program (VA-STEP) is a program for medical technologists who are seeking fulfilling careers improving the lives of those who’ve served the nation. You’ll be employed as a trainee, working full-time over the course of a 10-week summer program between your junior and senior years.
Through this program, each facility has transition opportunities designed to keep you employed after graduation, moving you from trainee to medical technologist role as part of your pre-certification placement. As an added incentive, you may be hired at a salary rate above the minimum.
