Public Statement On the Attack That Killed SPC Sarah Beckstrom and Critically Wounded SSG Andrew Wolfe

Vietnam Veterans of America mourns the loss of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and condemns in the strongest terms the cowardly attack in Washington, D.C., that also left Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe critically wounded. Both were proud, uniformed members of the National Guard serving their nation with honor.

SPC Beckstrom was not lost on a distant battlefield, but here at home, ambushed by an individual who chose to hide in the shadows rather than face those who defend this country. Her life, promise, and service were taken by an unforgivable act. She represented the best of a new generation of Americans who step forward voluntarily to protect our nation. We will say her name with reverence, gratitude, and solemn respect.

SSG Wolfe now fights for his life. He embodies the quiet courage and resilience of our National Guard. We pray for his full recovery and hold his family and fellow soldiers close in our thoughts as they endure this trauma.

This attack was not only an assault on two service members; it was an assault on the uniform they wore, the flag they served, and the nation they swore to defend. It was a deliberate, senseless act of violence that must be met with full accountability. VVA calls on federal and local authorities to investigate and prosecute this crime with the full force of the law. Justice must be certain, and the safety of those who wear America’s uniform must remain an unwavering priority.

To the family of SPC Sarah Beckstrom:Your daughter served with courage, dignity, and a devotion to duty far beyond her years. We grieve with you, we honor her sacrifice, and we will keep her memory alive. No parent should ever face what you now endure, and Vietnam Veterans of America stands ready to support you in the days and years ahead.

To SSG Wolfe and his family:We pray for healing, strength, and restoration. You are not alone. This nation, and our entire community of veterans, stands with you.

To the men and women of the National Guard:Your service is valued, your sacrifice is seen, and your courage is respected by every veteran who came before you. May God grant comfort to the grieving, strength to the wounded, and wisdom to a nation that must protect those who protect us.

Never again shall one generation of veterans abandon another.
