Big Spring opens new Recreation and Meeting Center

In a significant stride toward enhancing the quality of life for Veterans, West Texas VA’s grand opening of the new Recreation and Meeting Center was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that marked the latest addition to the Big Spring area.

It was the unveiling of the second of five planned structures dedicated to providing state-of-the-art amenities and care for those who have served our nation.

The new center is designed to be more than just a building, though. It’s envisioned as a hub of activity and connection, offering a variety of services—including an Internet cafe, barber shop, kitchen and activities hall.

“A level of care that is unparalleled.”

The ceremony was hosted by Keith Bass, medical center director. “We put the Veteran at the center of all we do. This place of healing delivers a level of care that is unparalleled and is what our Veterans deserve,” Bass said.

Highlighting the event was the keynote address delivered by J. L. Stevens, World War II Navy Veteran. His poignant words resonated with attendees, weaving a narrative of valor, sacrifice and the undying spirit of those who have served.

“I thank that beautiful lady, my doctor Dr. Chitwood, for all she does for me and my fellow Veterans. This is home and these folks are family and they take care of us, head to toe,” Steven said.

The ceremony included the soul-stirring rendition of the national anthem performed by Gloria Pierce, which echoed the patriotic fervor of the occasion.

A beacon of hope and camaraderie for Veterans

With over 50 staff, Veterans, friends, community members and Veteran Service Organizations in attendance, the event was a powerful demonstration of the collective will to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for Veterans.

The initiative for the development of this center reflects a broader mission to ensure that Veterans receive the best care and support that is reflective of their immense contributions to the nation. By integrating modern technology and facilities with compassionate care, the center is set to become a beacon of hope and camaraderie for Veterans.

Bass highlighted the collaborative effort that made the center a reality, thanking the staff, community members and organizations that contributed to the project. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in acknowledging and repaying the debt of gratitude owed to those who have donned the uniform. “There were many here who brought this to reality,” said Bass. “And I thank them all for their dedication, day in and day out, in bringing the best care possible to our Veterans.”
