Veteran spouse unemployment continues to be a significant issue within the military community and remains over five times the national average.
At Blue Star Families, we continuously seek ways to address the issue of Veteran spouse unemployment. Our annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey is an essential part of our work to understand the challenges unique to military and Veteran families.
Who Should Take the Survey?
Our 2023 Military Family Lifestyle survey results indicate that career challenges during military life may extend even after the family transitions out of military service, with 30% of Veteran spouse respondents expressing concerns about transitioning from military life. Participating in the survey and sharing your experiences can help us better understand these concerns and work toward meaningful solutions to support spouses in their career pursuits during and after the member’s service.

Why your participation matters
Your survey feedback will help develop internal programs and advocate for policy changes in Congress that aim to support families like yours. Blue Star Families and Hiring Our Heroes presented The 4+1 Commitment, in partnership with the Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership, as part of the Do Your Part campaign made possible by Craig Newmark Philanthropies. It is a way for employers to voluntarily commit to improving military and Veteran spouse employment outcomes by adopting policies that support flexible work arrangements, remote work options and career development opportunities for military spouses. VA became the first government agency to adopt The 4+1 Commitment in early March, ensuring that military and Veteran spouses have increased access to employment opportunities within the organization.
Your input is crucial to addressing long-standing issues, like unemployment, within the military and Veteran community. This year’s survey covers topics related to recruitment, retention, health care, employment and many others. Take the 2024 Military Family Lifestyle Survey today and use your voice to shape the future of support for you and your family.
