Veterans Legacy Grants Program seeks proposals

A Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) published in the Federal Register for the National Cemetery Administration’s Veterans Legacy Grants Program (VLGP). VLGP, as part of the Veterans Legacy Program, is awarding grants for a maximum of $400,000 per awardee; qualifying educational institutions and non-profit organizations (501c3) from across the country may apply.

VLGP seeks grant proposals that foster students in colleges and universities—including (K-12)—to fund research and provide a tangible report using the stories of those interred in VA’s National Cemeteries and VA Grant Funded cemeteries with a focus on underrepresented Veterans and service members—to include, and not limited to, race, gender, ethnicity, identity and Veterans from LGBTQ communities.

In Fiscal Year 2023, NCA awarded grants to six organizations totaling more than $2,187,800. These grants provided funding to educational institutions and other eligible entities to conduct cemetery research and produce educational tools for the public to utilize and learn about the histories of Veterans interred in VA national cemeteries and VA grant-funded state and Tribal Veterans’ cemeteries.

Projects under VLGP can include books, films, graphic novels, educational manuals, professional development opportunities for teachers, as well as electronic database resource materials.

NCA established VLP in 2016 as a transformational effort to memorialize our Veterans. The program has awarded more than 30 contracts and 12 previous grants to educational organizations, and it has engaged more than 15,000 students of all levels in Veteran research and commemoration. VLGP projects add to the continued collection of Veteran biographies, documentaries, lesson plans and instructional aids.
